CNC-TURNED PARTS: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does CNC turning work?
CNC turning is done with a CNC lathe. Machining information can be read into the memory of the control because the machine has a computer numerical control. The information is used again and again for machining the workpieces without any further information supply.
What does CNC turning mean?
CNC turning is an automated manufacturing process that is used to produce rotationally symmetrical components. It is mainly used in the metalworking industry and has several advantages over the conventional lathe process in terms of speed, automation and processing.
How does a CNC machine work?
CNC machines stand for Computerised Numerical Control and are machine tools that can automatically produce workpieces with high precision for complex shapes through the use of control technology.
WHAT DOES CNC TURNING MEAN?
The letters “CNC” stand for “Computerized Numerical Control”. This specific type of turning refers to a control technique used in modern industrial machining centres. The CNC way of working is used for the automatic production of complex components.
CNC turning is an automated manufacturing process that is used to produce rotationally symmetrical components. The process can be used to achieve high repeatability and efficient production of complex rotationally symmetrical geometries.
CNC turning technology generates the production of CNC turned parts for the automotive industry and mechanical and plant engineering, as well as the production of very small turned parts for medical technology and electrical engineering. Thanks to this particular type of CNC turning, small series and medium series on the one hand – and large series on the other hand – can be produced economically.
THE ADVANTAGES OF CNC TURNING
CNC turning can boast several advantages over the conventional manufacturing process on a normal lathe. These include:
- Computer-aided design of the workpiece using CAD software.
- No permanent supervision by personnel necessary
- The entire manufacturing process can be purely automated
- High economic efficiency in series production
- Fast, clean and high-quality work
- Increase in productivity due to degree of automation
- Reproducibility of high quantities in the same quality
- Less wear and tear on the tools due to computer-aided control
- Better plannability due to precise prediction of turned parts
- Production of parts with highly complex geometry thanks to the complexity of the CNC machines
- Interconnection of CNC lathes in order to harmonise production processes
In CNC turning, a basic distinction is made between internal and external turning, where the lathe can handle both types of turning. Depending on the feed direction, the turning processes are also subdivided again into transverse and longitudinal turning. With the cooling system, the energy expended during the cutting process, which is converted into heat, can be controlled and ensured at a stable temperature.
CREATION OF CNC TURNED PARTS
CNC turned parts can be produced on a CNC lathe by a rotary movement of the workpiece combined with translatory movements of the tools. Thanks to CNC turning, costs can be saved and a high material removal rate can be achieved:
- CNC turning is continuous and not subject to uninterrupted cutting conditions in engagement.
- CNC lathes are mechanically simpler and prove to be more cost-effective than milling machines for the same output and dimensions.
- In addition to pure lathes, CNC machining can often be used in combined machines with driven tools and milling spindles.

CNC TURNING:
OUR GUARANTEE FOR FIRST-CLASS RESULTS
The special process of CNC turning surpasses the original lathe process in many areas. For example, the following relevant setpoints are monitored by the lathe alone during the manufacturing process:
- The speed of the chip movement
- The position of the tool and the tool spindle
- The coolant supply and the material supply
- The speed of rotation of the tool spindle
With the CNC turning process, it is possible for us to automate the loading, the tool change, the monitoring and also the quality control during the entire production process in our modern machining centre.
We can therefore guarantee you not only a high degree of speed, but also a variety of clean and high-quality work.
